BRIEF HISTORY
Vocational and Technical Education (VTE) started in January, 1993 as part of the Department of Educational Foundations and Management. Vocational and Technical Education had just one student. VTE became full fledged department in June, 1997 following a department rationalization exercise which resulted in Educational Foundations and Management being dropped from the initial joint-existence. Today, the student population has increased to seventy-six (76).
philosophy
The philosophy of the Department of Vocational and Technical Education is to seek to mold the total being by developing the mind and imparting both theoretical and practical knowledge that encourage self reliance in the individual and service to humanity. This is so considering the fact that technology has contributed more than any other factor in changing human ways of living on a daily basis. The Programme of study and training are therefore been designed to assist the individual to understand, exploit and if need be change his environment technologically.
objectives
The objectives of the Department are:
* To provide trained manpower in Applied Science and Technology
* To provide technical knowledge and vocational skills necessary for industrial and economic development.
* To train people who can apply scientific knowledge to the improvement and solution of environmental problems for the use and convenience of man.
AVAILABLE PROGRAMMES AND AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION
a. Programmes
The Department of Vocational and Technical Education at present offers one regular four-year degree Programme, namely, Bachelor of Science education (Technology) in the Vocational and Technical education Area. Arrangements are also in top gear to mount a Long Degree Programme (LVP). With time, it is hopped that Vocational education areas may also be covered.
b. Areas of Specialization
The Department has ten Vocational Technical Education area of specialization, namely;
* Woodwork Technology
* Metal work Technology
* Fabrication and Welding Technology
* Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Technology
* Agricultural Mechanization Technology
* Electrical Installation Technology
* Auto-Mechanics Technology
* Electronics Technology Workshop
* Building Construction Technology
* Drafting Technology
At present, only Six (6) of the ten areas of specialization are mounted. These are:
* Woodwork Technology
* Building Technology
* Metalwork Technology
* Electronics Technology
* Electrical Installation Technology
* Auto-Mechanics Technology
The Department's Curriculum has however been designed to cover the other areas of specialization pending students' demands and academic staff reinforcement.
