VACANCY FOR THE POST OF VICE-CHANCELLOR

Established in 1992, Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University (MOAU) Makurdi (formerly Benue State University) is the first state-owned university in Northern Nigeria. The university's vision, mission, and core values are fundamental to its mandate. MOAU has a total enrollment of 34,927 students, comprising 31,451 undergraduates and 3,476 graduates. The university offers 86 accredited undergraduate programs and 282 postgraduate programs across its 14 faculties. Additionally, it is home to the Centre for Food Technology and Research (CEFTER), a World Bank Academic Centre of Excellence serving West and Central Africa. The academic staff strength is 699, including 189 full professors. MOAU is on an exciting journey of change, aiming to reposition itself as a distinguished national center of excellence.

The university is seeking a Vice-Chancellor to lead this transformative journey for the next five years. The Vice-Chancellor will serve as the Chief Academic Officer, Chief Executive Officer, Chief Accounting Officer, and Chief Security Officer of the university, responsible to the Council and Senate. This role carries specific legal, fiduciary, and regulatory responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities of the Position

  • Provide academic, strategic, and change leadership to the university.
  • Formulate and implement the university's 2026-2030 Strategic Plan.
  • Grow and ensure the sustainability of the MOAU Endowment Fund.
  • Promote MOAU as an entrepreneurial institution and a recognized international brand.
  • Develop focused areas for academic research, expansion, and infrastructure development.
  • Expand access and address current challenges in higher education through the development of 'MOAU Online.'
  • Foster, celebrate, and promote diversity and inclusion.
  • Establish essential linkages with international players in higher education to encourage strategic partnerships and advance cutting-edge research at MOAU.
  • Cultivate a culture of meritocracy, innovation, ethical conduct, and civic engagement.

Desirable Skills and Personality Characteristics

Candidates, who should not be older than 60 years by November 2, 2025, should possess most, if not all, of the following attributes:
  • A strong record of academic and scholarly accomplishments, personal credibility, and evidence of high academic standards and rigor at both national and international levels.
  • A solid understanding and commitment to the core values of MOAU.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Nigerian and African higher education landscape, including its current and future challenges and opportunities.
  • A clear understanding of MOAU's role as a state university in the development of the region and its mission to be a hub of excellence and promoter of the public good.
  • Insight into the importance of libraries, laboratories, technology, curriculum reform, and entrepreneurship in higher education.
  • A compelling vision for student success, staff and faculty professional development, conflict management, and a feasible plan for maintaining stable academic calendars.
  • A good understanding of how to advance a university in a virtual environment.
  • Evidence of sound judgment, ethical conduct, successful leadership experience, and a strong moral compass.
  • A solid grasp of Distance Learning and Online programs and their role in university education.
  • Competence in policy and program development and implementation, multi-sector fundraising, and financial management.
Minimum Qualification
- A PhD in a relevant discipline and a full professorial rank at a recognized university, with a minimum of five years of experience as a professor.

Conditions of Service
The appointment will be for a single term of five years, with competitive salary and allowances determined by the Council.

  • 3. Five signed referee reports addressed to the Registrar of the university, attesting to the applicant's character and academic competencies.
  • 4. A Statement of Interest (not exceeding 1500 words) outlining the applicant's approach to university governance and detailing their qualifications to lead MOAU on its journey of change and distinction. This statement should also identify anticipated challenges and propose innovative solutions as a change agent.

  • A signed and dated statement to the effect that the applicant is not a member of any Cult or Secret Society.
