ASSESSMENT OF SUN RAYS FM AGRICULTURAL PROGRAMMES ON FARMERS EDUCATION IN KORINYA, BENUE STATE

Abstract

This study assessed the role of Sun Rays FM agricultural programmes (Farming World and Tom Sule) on farmers’ education in Korinya, Benue State. Using a survey research design, data were collected from one hundred and eighty-five respondents using simple random sampling. The study utilized the structured questionnaire as an instrument of data collection. Data collected was analysed using simple percentages and tables. Uses and gratification theory was used for the study. Findings revealed that 85.4% of respondents were familiar with the programmes, which educated farmers mainly on the use of herbicides, fertilizer application, and improved seeds.

Farmers’

key needs included information on loans (40.5%), weather forecasts (36.8%), and crop preservation methods (17.3%). The majority (80%) acknowledged that the programmes had positively impacted their farming practices, while 67% perceived the overall impact on their education as positive. The study concludes that Sun-Rays FM agricultural programmes significantly contribute to farmers’

education and productivity in Korinya. Recommendations were made based on the findings. Some of these include: Channels of feedback should be made available to farmers to enable them to air out their views on agricultural development by creating an interactive forum on these programmes so that the right messages will be packaged for the audience. To enhance a better understanding, folk media should be integrated for synergy and also listener groups should be organized to discuss the agricultural programmes after they have been listened to. Testimonies of farmers who have benefited from the programmes ( farming world and tom sule) should be aired from time to time. This will encourage full participation by other farmers in the programmes and practice of the farming methods learnt from the various programmes.
