A SURVEY OF INFLECTONS IN TIV LANGUAGE



Abstract

This paper analyses Inflections in Tiv language. The researcher noticed that inflectional morphemes carry different shapes in different environments, this, coupled with the desire to further describe the language motivated this study. The objectives of this study are: Identify inflectional morphemes in Tiv and describe their position, explain their functions in Tiv grammar. The study used primary sources of data collection which were sourced through interviews.

The study found out that, inflectional morphemes in Tiv are used in Tiv morphological process to account for tense marking which could be past tense, progressive tense and in some cases habitual actions.

These inflectional morphemes also inflect for pluralisation in Tiv.

There are morphological variations in the inflectional morphology of Tiv and other languages. It generally contributes to knowledge by revealing that, inflections are realized in Tiv language differently from other languages. The study specifically contributes to knowledge by showing the shapes of inflectional morphemes that account for inflection in Tiv language, it also accounts for what inflectional morphemes seek to achieve in Tiv morphological process.
