This study analyses the conceptual metaphors used to describe inflation in the articles written in The Guardian and Daily Trust Newspapers. While previous studies have concentrated on conceptual metaphors from other perspectives, the focus has not been on conceptual metaphors of inflation in Nigerian dailies. It is this gap that the current study fills up. The specific objectives of the study, among others, include: to identify the conceptual metaphors used to describe inflation and to highlight the various types of conceptual metaphors used to describe inflation in the dailies. Anchored on Lakoff, G. and Johnson, M. (2017) Conceptual Metaphor Theory, data were sourced from The Guardian and Daily Trust Newspapers from 2022 to 2024.
Adopting a qualitative approach, ten articles on inflation from these dailies were purposively identified and analysed using CMT. The findings of the study reveal that the conceptual metaphors used in describing inflation in the dailies include but are not limited to inflation as a movable entity, as a journey, as a monster/threat. The study contributions to existing knowledge in the fields of Cognitive Linguistics, Conceptual metaphor and Communication. It concludes that the identified conceptual metaphors simplify an intricate concept like inflation, by framing it in relevant and vivid terms.
